THE DOBLE FUERTE
Puros Indios Cigar Co. released the "Doble Fuerte," which the company touts as its strongest cigar. The cigar gets its flavor and power from an aged corojo seed wrapper grown in Nicaragua, which the company calls double maduro because of the deep, chocolate color.
Puros Indios set out to make a "very strong, very fullbodied cigar," said Alex Diez of Puros Indios. Diez emphasizes that to get the wrapper to this color and potency, his grandfather, Puros Indios founder Rolando Reyes Sr., took his time and aged it naturally. "A lot of people will cook the tobacco [to make it dark], but this way you lose a lot of the oils and the flavor," said Diez. "The other way is to age the wrapper and continually turn it over again and again, which is what my grandfather did for three years."
Puros Indios released the cigar with the same title under both its Puros Indios and Cuba Aliados brands. Both cigars will use the dark Nicaraguan wrapper leaf and a filler blend made from Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. The Aliados is the stronger of the two because of its Nicaraguan binder. The Puros Indios uses a milder binder from the Dominican Republic.
The Puros Indios version will come in two sizes: a Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 50 ring gauge, and a Caņones #1, measuring 6 3/4 inches by 48.
The Cuba Aliados will also come in a pair: the Rothschild Negro, 5 by 50, and the Toro Negro, 6 by 53. The company expects to make approximately 150,000 cigars in total.
Housed in engraved cedar boxes of 20, the Doble Fuertes have a suggested retail price of $5.50 each for the Aliados Rothschild and the Puros Indios Robusto, and $6 each for the Aliados Toro and the Puros Indios Caņones #1.
