DONA FLOR MATA FINA PREMIUM CIGARS
Following the new government's seizure of the factories in 1960, the Menendez family, wrongly thinking the revolution to be momentary, fled Cuba to Miami. It was soon clear that they had lost their Cuban company forever, so they attempted to reestablish the premium cigar business in Spain, rolling cigars using the Montecristo mold.
For a little while, they did well in creating cigars, some of which president J.F. Kennedy was supposedly fond of.
As incomes declined in Spain after Franco's failure, Felix Menendez settled in Brazil in the early 1970s. Choosing to position close to the fertile land of Recanavo (Bahia region) he started a cigar making company with Brazilian partner Mario Amerino. Dona Flor and its sister brand Gabriela (named for characters created by the Brazilian novelist Jorge Amado) were created and are now the leading brands in Brazil.
Flavoring of the Connecticut shade cigars is gentle with complex spices, while the Mata Fina is a great deal more full bodied with sensible spicy undercurrents. Each premium cigar burns smoothly with a more scented character than many cigars - two aspects which have made it well-liked in European countries such as Germany.
These Brazilian puros cigars (one of the only on the market) feature pure aged Mata Fina tobacco and are offered in a sun-grown Maduro wrapper to yield a delectably smooth yet robust taste, or a Connecticut shade-grown wrapper for a more subtle, yielding flavor.
